The role you’ll contribute:
The pharmacy technician supervisor may have direct reports as well as has the primary responsibility of overseeing pharmacy technician training, technician scheduling, and pharmacy technician assignments and implementations. The pharmacy technician supervisor performs and oversees a wide range of supportive duties to assist the pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medications so that patients will receive care consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the AdventHealth Outpatient Pharmacy. The pharmacy technician supervisor will perform all required duties/tasks necessary to provide for the effective daily operations of all department services and programs and oversees the other pharmacy technicians to assure all tasks/duties are completed. The pharmacy technician supervisor should be able to handle a high volume of work with minimal direct supervision and perform all level I through IV job functions. Works directly with the Pharmacy manager and pharmacy director to assure operational efficiency and proper communication is cascaded to pharmacy clerk and technician staff. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. The pharmacy technician supervisor also oversees all inventory management tasks and assists the director of outpatient pharmacy in handling customer service issues and concerns.
The value you’ll bring to the team:
Leadership: Leads the other pharmacy technicians within the department, working to make sure they have a clear understanding of duties and responsibilities. Reports directly to the Director of Outpatient Pharmacy any concerns from pharmacy technicians or pharmacy clerks and serves as the liaison with cascading of necessary information or workflow changes. Also serves as the lead and point of contact for interdisciplinary communication related to technician questions and topics. May supervise other pharmacy technicians as direct reports, assuring they are properly trained, scheduled, and compliant with all duties and responsibilities.
Operations: Demonstrates operational leadership and oversees day to day departmental pharmacy technician questions and problems. Serves as the subject matter expert for pharmacy technician processes and procedures, providing coaching and guidance with operational questions and workflows.
Training: Coordinates and provides training to all new pharmacy staff. Maintains all training documents making sure they are up to date and readily accessible. Serves as the expert is explaining complex pharmacy issues, answers and providing resources for team members to seek solutions. Assures that all technician team members are aware of and maintain proper licensure requirements and provides guidance for renewals or desired certification. Oversees and trains interns and technician students and facilitates pharmacy technician training program where applicable.
Prescription processing: follow a systematic procedure for assisting with the flow of prescriptions through the pharmacy. Obtain patient information required for processing of all prescriptions. Obtain insurance information from patient and keep patient abreast of any insurance problems. Maintain current patient information in pharmacy management software. Assure that patient has signed HIPAA release. Keep pharmacist aware of patient status and need for prescription check. Assure orders are processed, dispensed and delivered accurately and promptly. Always obtain pharmacists’ verification before distribution of any medication. Oversee pharmacy technicians in all above listed duties to assure proper prescription processing.
Specialty Pharmacy: Serve as a point of contact for patient care coordinators, nurses, physicians, or other medical office staff for specialty pharmacy processing challenges and maintain thorough knowledge of dispensing requirements and technician duties related to specialty or limited distribution drugs. Oversee pharmacy technician processing and preparation of specialty pharmacy medications and remain current with new products available for disease states. Answer operational and processing questions posed by other pharmacy technicians and pharmacy clerks related to specialty product dispensing.
Prescription preparation: follows strict guidelines in preparing and dispensing medications under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist. Assist pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medication accurately and efficiently. Prepare various compounds using aseptic technique under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist. Prepare and label prescriptions for the pharmacist before dispensing. Obtain controlled substances for prescription filling under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist. Double-count schedule II-controlled substances before verification by a pharmacist. Organize all dispensing materials, (i.e. stock container, original prescription(s), labeling, etc.), for final verification by a pharmacist. Demonstrate knowledge of the generic names of medications, medication uses, and a good understanding of mathematical principles. Oversee pharmacy technicians in all above listed duties to assure proper prescription preparation.
Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:
Required:
- Competent in medical terminology, medication names and medication use
- Proficient with prescription-filling software and other computer skills
- Ability to work under pressure
- Ability to interact professionally with public and other medical staff
- Knowledge of compounding oral/topical medications
- Knowledgeable in all the major prescription insurance carrier reimbursement guidelines and eligibility for coverage by third-party payers
- Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities and professional communication to pharmacy staff members
- Ability to train pharmacy technicians and clerks
- High School graduate or G.E.D. certification.
- 5 years of pharmacy technician experience, in a retail pharmacy, mail-order pharmacy, central fill or hospital setting
- At least 1 year experience within an AdventHealth Outpatient Pharmacy
- Florida Board of Pharmacy Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPT) license; must complete state required continuing education requirements
- PTCB- National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT); must complete national required continuing education requirements
Preferred:
- Specialty pharmacy experience preferred
- Associate degree in physical science, business or healthcare related field
