Evaluates operations on an ongoing basis to ensure safe, appropriate, cost-effective care delivery:
- Develops, enforces, and maintains policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate, and safe drug use.
- Evaluates operations on an ongoing basis using principles of continuous process improvement.
- Participates in select Hospital committees.
- Leads the Antibiotic Stewardship Committee in conjunction with the Hospital’s Infection Control leader.
- Develops, implements, checks, and retools action plans to address variances and improve efficiency.
- Develops and maintains a medical-staff-approved formulary.
- Supervises drug storage and preparation areas throughout the hospital.
- Provides for the educational needs of healthcare professionals and patients and their families.
- Ensures maintenance of an adequate drug supply.
- Establishes specifications for the procurement of drugs, chemicals, and biologicals.
- Assures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.
- Maintains a quality improvement plan for the department.
Supervises, Trains, Mentors, And Evaluates Staff
- Supervises pharmacy personnel.
- Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.
- Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics; maintains an appropriate staffing level.
- Provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff.
- Promotes individual professional growth.
- Communicates with staff and promotes staff ownership in problem solving and participation in operational decision making.
Prepares annual budget, controls, and reduces costs, forecasts operational needs, and reviews expenditures to ensure budget limits are not exceeded:
- Prepares a pharmacy budget annually.
- Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines.
- Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
- Administers reports, documents, payroll records, employee surveys and other required data.
- Ensures applicable training records, current licensures, and other records required to document compliance are maintained in secure department files.
Establishes the scope of services and develops annual implementation plans which contribute to the organizational strategic objectives:
- Develop and implement pharmacy services in collaboration with associated department services.
- Develop, implement, and maintain a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization.
- Participate in all committees/functions required by the organization including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Establish productive collaborative relationships with physicians, nursing, administration, and other hospital staff.
- Meet customers' needs and expectations.
Maintains Competency Required For Current Job Title/position
- Maintain current pharmacist license.
- Complete all competency/skills assessment requirements.
- Work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff; voice concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner; foster a team environment.
- Demonstrate sound professional judgment consistent with clinical/academic background.
- Maintains and ensures compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Prepare and review medication orders per physician request using appropriate techniques according to protocols, policies, and procedures:
- Assure the appropriateness of a medication order, including age-related factors, before preparing or permitting the distribution of the first dose. Maintain the accuracy of patient profiles.
- Exercise skill as a team member in the management of medical emergencies.
- Oversee pharmacy technicians to assist with all medication distribution functions.
Requirements
What You Will Need
- Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or higher. MBA or MHA preferred.
- Possess current license, in good standing, to practice pharmacy in the State of Maine.
- Three to five (3-5) years of experience in a hospital pharmacy is required.
- Clinical experience and/or pharmacy staffing experience.
- Trained in general use of pharmacy computer systems.
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite of products, with advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
