Position Summary
This position leads and provides strategic direction to the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs for BD Diagnostics, Broken Bow. The EHS Manager is responsible for leading the strategic design, implementation, and management of all EHS policies, procedures, and activities in accordance with all local, state (NDEQ, etc.), federal (OSHA, EPA, etc.), and BDX requirements to ensure regulatory compliance. The position is accountable for the achievement of site and business metrics related to established EHS goals in conjunction with the site Leadership Team and associates.
Essential Functions
The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
- Leads the development and implementation of long-term strategic EHS systems and programs in support of behavior-based safety, risk assessment/hazard identification, environmental/sustainability, and associate health.
- Provides guidance to the site Leadership Team regarding EHS strategic objectives and regulatory compliance issues.
- Monitors performance/impact of the plant safety system and programs. Recommends modifications for improvement of established systems and programs. Serves as the catalyst leading the plant’s overall safety performance.
- Compiles and distributes safety and health related information to be used as tools for the reduction and/or elimination of workplace accidents.
- Works directly with facilitators/supervisors and the hourly workforce to identify hazards and eliminate unsafe conditions.
- Provides leadership, training, and strategic guidance for the Safety Core Team, plant business unit teams, facilitators/supervisors, and support areas, as well as EHS project teams. Oversees and mentors EHS activities across the site.
- Directs and coordinates the Job Safety Analysis, Hazard Assessment, Physical Capacity Profile, Hearing Conservation, Industrial Hygiene sampling, fire protection, LOTO, and environmental reporting programs for the site. Coordinates additional EHS related programs as needed and identified.
- Coordinates and/or performs safety validations of all new and/or modified equipment and/or processes. Evaluates and identifies areas of improvement from a safety and health perspective to ensure associate safety. Provides training to key qualified associates to assist in conducting safety validations.
- Identifies and manages personal protective equipment needs for the site, as well as evaluates the effectiveness and functionality of required PPE.
- Completes site reporting consistent with EPA, OSHA, and BD corporate requirements.
- Establishes, maintains, and communicates EHS metrics to evaluate current programs and analyze opportunities for improvement.
- Serves as the plant liaison to the corporate EHS office for all environmental, health and safety issues.
- Site lead for the Performance Verification Process (PVP) through corporate EHS.
- Manages the resolution of identified EHS audit findings.
SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
EHS Manager
- Ensure new associates review and understand their Job Safety Analysis.
- Review on-the-job safety with associates.
- Assist in updating Job Safety Analysis when a job process changes.
- Work with the Safety Core Team to schedule department safety audits, review and respond to audit issues.
- Participate in Plant and Business Unit Safety meetings.
- Establish and report on annual safety goals as set out in Standards of Performance. Goals to be specific, measurable, track able, and include as many parameters as possible.
- Provide and maintain a safe and healthful place to work:
- Be constantly alert to observe and correct unsafe conditions and practices.
- Investigate reports of unsafe conditions and correct the cause.
- Know what, where, when, and why personal protective equipment should be worn.
- Provide and maintain a safe process to follow:
- Know the process and the "why" of it.
- Know the properties and hazards of the materials involved.
- Be alert to improve the present processes from the safety standpoint based on knowledge of the materials and methods involved.
- Evaluate new and existing processes from a safety standpoint.
- Encourage suggestions for improved job methods, but stress that approval must be obtained before any changes are tried.
- Prevent "shortcuts" by being certain that associates know the job hazards and the corrective measure for each.
Required Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Health, and Safety; Occupational Health and Safety; Industrial Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Safety Management; Industrial Hygiene or a related field is required, with a Master’s Degree preferred.
- Current certification from recognized EHS entities preferred.
- 4 years of EHS Management experience preferred.
- EHS leadership experience in a manufacturing environment. Advanced knowledge and training related to EPA, OSHA, safety, legal, and regulatory compliance. Ability to balance multiple priorities. Previous involvement in a team-based environment.
Supervision
- This position reports directly to the Plant Manager.
- Reporting to: this position has the Occupational Heath Nurse and the EHS Engineer reporting directly to them.
